Insight of the Month

“Tell me to what you pay attention and I will tell you who you
are.”

-Jose Ortega y Gasset

How often do you look at a situation in which you feel trapped and declare, “I have no choice”?

Author and speaker Danny Cox, in his book SEIZE THE DAY (Career Press,1994) talks about a man who turned his life around when he sat down and asked himself four important questions:

1) What do I really want? He didn’t want to just sleepwalk through life, nor look back someday and feel regret.

2) What will it cost? in time, money and commitment?

3) Am I willing to pay the price?

4) What is the best time to start paying the price?

Here are five reasons most of us don’t ask ourselves questions like Danny Cox’s:

- We feel like slaves to our jobs and our debts. - We don’t take the time to slow down and reflect on ourselves and our lives.
- We live in fear of making changes and the ramifications of those changes.
- We fall prey to the mores of our conditioning – “rules” instilled in us by family, peers, and our culture. - We don’t even know that we’re allowed to ask the questions.

If you find yourself resisting asking the “hard” questions, here
are strategies and ways of thinking to get you started:

- Recognize that we suffer more by not asking the hard questions than we do by asking. In the larger scheme, it costs you more not to be yourself than it does to be yourself. Full self-expression is one milestone on the road to contentment.
- Acknowledge that most likely, you already know – deep down - the answers to some, if not all, the questions. - Talk with a trusted friend and/or a coach who will challenge you to question your assumptions about yourself and your life.

We pay dearly when we don’t challenge our assumptions about ourselves. And while going after what you want may cost you in time, money and commitment, the payoff is well worth the cost. What are you willing to “pay” to do what you want to do, say what you want to say, and be who you are?

Now It's Your Turn

  • I challenge to ask yourself Danny Cox’s four questions. Write the answers down and make sure to put the date on the page. There are no right or wrong answers, so don’t judge yourself!
