The Five Functions of a Team
"Teamwork remains the one sustainable competitive advantage
that has been largely untapped." ~ From The Five Dysfunctions of a Team
I love the Five Dysfunctions of a Team framework developed by
Patrick Lencioni. It's an elegant framework that gets right to the
heart of common team dysfunctions. It diagnoses and addresses the
universal team dysfunctions in an insightful and deeply practical
manner than sets the stage for actual change.
The format is
combination of exercises and discussion with full participation by
team members. Rather than being told what being a team should "look
like," participants identify, explore and devise solutions for
breakdowns, gaps and conflict in team functioning.
The Five Dysfunctions and Functions:
- Absence of Trust/Building Trust
- Fear of Conflict/Mastering Conflict
- Lack of Commitment/Achieving Commitment
- Avoidance Accountability/Embracing Accountability
- Inattention to Results/Focusing on Results
Each function builds on the previous one – a team that trusts each other
can master productive conflict which leads to the ability to commit the
decisions and hold each other accountable for commitments. Finally, teams
that hold one another accountable for commitments and behavior are able to
focus on getting the results they need to meet their mission successfully.
How do you get started? We'll discuss what's working and not
working on team, I'll assess your team's needs and design the workshop to
meet your organizational goals.
